Burt Everhardt made a promise a long time ago, and he has no intention of breaking it now. His wife Ruth is disappearing into Alzheimer’s. His children want her in a memory care facility. He says she is his wife and she stays home.

When Ruth wanders into a Chicago blizzard one night, the argument the family has been avoiding for years finally arrives. Their son has been carrying this alone and is out of patience. Their daughter comes home from California with a marriage she is not talking about. Nobody in this family is wrong, which is what makes it hard.

A film about what a vow costs when it is tested, and what grown children owe the parents who raised them. Hilary Swank and Michael Shannon as the siblings, Blythe Danner as Ruth, and Robert Forster as Burt in the finest work of his career.

Written and directed by Elizabeth Chomko, drawing on her own family.
