After His baptism, Jesus is led by the Spirit into the Judean desert. He fasts for forty days and forty nights. At the end of it, weak from hunger, He is met by Satan.

40: THE TEMPTATION OF CHRIST follows the account given in Matthew, Mark, and Luke: three temptations offered to a man at his most physically depleted. Bread from stones. Proof of the Father’s protection. Every kingdom of the world, in exchange for one act of worship. Satan takes several forms across the film, including the likeness of Christ’s own earthly parents, and argues his case as reasonable each time.

Nearly every word spoken by Jesus in this film is taken directly from scripture, either passages He quotes from the Old Testament or words recorded later in the Gospels.
