Explore: the Madaba Map
Inside of a 6th-century Greek Orthodox Church in the city of Madaba, Jordan, is the oldest known map of the lands of the Bible. Surviving fire, earthquakes, and even the collapse of the original church, the Madaba Map is a massive floor mosaic that depicts the area from Lebanon all the way to the Nile Delta, in stunning and creative detail. From detailed depictions of Jerusalem, including its various gates and churches, to Jericho and its famous palm trees. From lions and gazelles roaming around the Jordan River, to fish swimming from the salty Dead Sea, the map reveals how people in the 6th century understood the biblical world.
