The moment when David Pawson began to have “serious thoughts” about Christmas came when practising interrogatory prayer to find out more about the Lord’s feelings. David asked the Lord the specific question “Is there anything that makes you feel sick?” The reply almost made his blood run cold: It was the single word “Christmas”.

In Part 1, David explores the historical background to Christmas, beginning with its pagan origins of the festival celebrating nature, marked by the release of restraints and indulgence – excess which early Christians shunned. With the Christianising of the festival in the fourth century, “Christ-mass” became an official Christian institution. However, much of the pagan practice continued alongside the Christian elements. Despite public interest waning at times and Cromwell’s abolition of Christmas (until the Restoration), the resurgence of interest in the nineteenth century, influenced in large part by literature, and particularly the lead set by the Royal Family, led to the modern commercialised Christmas.
