The Chosen has been watched by more than 280 million people in 175 countries, and by its own creator’s estimate, roughly two-thirds of the cast are not Christians. This traces what the actors who play John the Baptist, Peter, Andrew, and Mary Magdalene actually believe, and what the man who plays Jesus says has changed his life on daily Mass and confession.

📌 Spotlight Moments
-Creator Dallas Jenkins reveals there is no religious or political litmus test for anyone on the cast or crew
-David Amito, who plays John the Baptist, is Jewish and says his spiritual life is tied to art and performance, not religion
-Shahar Isaac, who plays Simon Peter, says he approached the role by setting theology aside to find the man’s humanity
-Elizabeth Tabish, who plays Mary Magdalene, had written off religion entirely before the role gave her a renewed appreciation for Jesus
-Jonathan Roumie reveals daily Mass and confession leave him feeling “chemically slightly different,” describing it as healing and grounding
-Roumie was once advised by industry insiders to downplay his faith if he wanted to land acting roles, and refused

This story matters because it challenges an instinct most of us carry, the need to audit who’s “allowed” to tell a sacred story before we can trust it. Instead, it shows a room full of people who don’t agree about the most important thing in the world, building the most watched portrayal of Jesus ever made, and asks what that says about how God actually works through people.
