St. Bernard’s Central Catholic in Fitchburg, Massachusetts had the smallest football program in the state and about a hundred years of history. In 2018 the team won a state championship nobody expected. Weeks later, the Diocese of Worcester announced the school was closing.

What followed was a fight to keep the doors open: fundraising campaigns, enrollment drives, and a community of parents, alumni, and students who refused to accept the decision. Running alongside it was another football season, and a team that had figured out what was actually at stake.

Catholic school enrollment nationwide has fallen by more than half since the 1960s, and closures have followed. St. Bernard’s was supposed to be one of them. This is the story of why it wasn’t.

Featuring principal Linda Anderson and head coach Tom Bingham. Directed by Gregg Backer and Evan Kanew.
