The majority Evangelical view is that once someone has accepted Christ as Saviour, they are guaranteed salvation. But is it safe to assume that once we are saved, we are saved for always?

What does it mean to be “saved”?
David Pawson teaches that it means restoration: “to be free from all sins, and to be exactly what God meant me to be when he made me – restored to the perfect image of God. Since Christ is the perfect image of God, it means I shall actually be like Jesus. That is the objective of salvation.” However, he argues that salvation through the ongoing work of the Holy Spirit in the believer is a lifelong process, which means that the common phrase “once saved, always saved” is unbiblical. We can only declare that we are being saved as no one can be sure of their salvation until after death.

What are we being saved from?
David notes that “many people don’t want to be saved, but they do want to be safe. They are coming into faith as if they are taking out a life insurance policy”. Yet, first and foremost, Jesus’ sacrifice on the cross was to save us from our sins, not hell. This is achieved through the three stages of salvation: “justification”, “sanctification”, and “glorification”. However, the Christian must endure in their faith to avoid losing what they have found in Christ.

What are we being saved for?
David states that “God has gone back to work and he is creating again” and teaches that “God’s intention is to make a brand-new universe that will never know sin”. In order to inhabit it sinners need to be turned into saints so that they will not spoil it.
