In Part 2, David looks at the stance that the different Protestant Reformers took regarding Christmas, from the reluctant tolerance of Luther towards this “Roman Catholic creation” with its “pagan roots” to the strict Calvinist opposition, with John Knox persuading the Scots to drop Christmas altogether. Yet most state churches gave in to public sentiment. David looks at some of the deviations from the biblical account that are found in modern Christmas traditions, representations and beliefs.
