Steve describes the 36 rules he was given and says he broke them every day — “there was not one day I looked at those laws and said, I live the perfect life.” He says the monks’ answer to his guilt was to pray more, and that the chants were meant to erase sins from past lives as well as this one, with no confession to anyone. He says he chanted sometimes eight hours a day, and that the spiritual highs it produced vanished within minutes. He also tells Kyle he watched an aunt get healed in that system and then get worse afterward.

In his telling: “Sometimes I will get these like spiritual highs. But it would just disappear like three minutes later.”
