In 2016 Hollywood actor and filmmaker Mel Gibson appeared as a surprise guest at SoCal Harvest at Angel Stadium Sunday night and sat down on stage with evangelist Greg Laurie to discuss recent reports that he is working on a sequel to his blockbuster reenactment film βThe Passion of the Christβ for the first time.
In another interview screenwriter Randall Wallace said, βThe Passion is the beginning and thereβs a lot more story to tell.β
Gibson told Laurie, the senior pastor of the California-based Harvest Christian Fellowship, and over 36,000 people gathered at the home of the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim that he and Wallace are in fact, βtalking aboutβ the possibility of a follow-up film, which he said would be called βThe Resurrection.β
βWeβre talking about that. Of course, that is a huge undertaking,β Gibson said. βAnd you know, itβs not the βPassion 2.β Itβs called βThe Resurrection.β Of course, thatβs a very big subject and it needs to be looked at because we donβt want to just do a simple rendering of it β you know, read what happened.β
While Gibson is known for great Hollywood successes such as βMad Max,β βLethal Weapon,β βBraveheartβ and βWe Were Soldiers,β he explained that he likes to do movies with a Christian message like βThe Passion of the Christ,β βHacksaw Ridgeβ and possibly βThe Resurrectionβ because real superheroes βappeal to something greater than themselves.”
“Faith is a real thing. I think that often times, I made the ultimate superhero film in the βPassion of the Christ.β Someone like Desmond Doss is also a superhero and real superheroes donβt wear spandex and they donβt have a lot of 3-D special effects,β Gibson stressed. βBut, they do operate on a higher level, on a supernatural level. They actually look and appeal to something greater than themselves and then they do something super human.β
