In 2016 Hollywood actor and filmmaker Mel Gibson appeared as a surprise guest at SoCal Harvest at Angel Stadium Sunday night and sat down on stage with evangelist Greg Laurie to discuss recent reports that he is working on a sequel to his blockbuster reenactment film β€œThe Passion of the Christ” for the first time.
In another interview screenwriter Randall Wallace said, β€œThe Passion is the beginning and there’s a lot more story to tell.”
Gibson told Laurie, the senior pastor of the California-based Harvest Christian Fellowship, and over 36,000 people gathered at the home of the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim that he and Wallace are in fact, β€œtalking about” the possibility of a follow-up film, which he said would be called β€œThe Resurrection.”
β€œWe’re talking about that. Of course, that is a huge undertaking,” Gibson said. β€œAnd you know, it’s not the β€˜Passion 2.’ It’s called β€˜The Resurrection.’ Of course, that’s a very big subject and it needs to be looked at because we don’t want to just do a simple rendering of it β€” you know, read what happened.”
While Gibson is known for great Hollywood successes such as β€œMad Max,” β€œLethal Weapon,” β€œBraveheart” and β€œWe Were Soldiers,” he explained that he likes to do movies with a Christian message like β€œThe Passion of the Christ,” β€œHacksaw Ridge” and possibly β€œThe Resurrection” because real superheroes β€œappeal to something greater than themselves.”
“Faith is a real thing. I think that often times, I made the ultimate superhero film in the β€˜Passion of the Christ.’ Someone like Desmond Doss is also a superhero and real superheroes don’t wear spandex and they don’t have a lot of 3-D special effects,” Gibson stressed. β€œBut, they do operate on a higher level, on a supernatural level. They actually look and appeal to something greater than themselves and then they do something super human.”
