Summary

SummaryI grew up in a home shadowed by addiction and never imagined I’d follow that path—but at 13, I was swept into drugs and alcohol alongside my dad. Desperation forced me to cross into Mexico with contraband for my family’s needs, and when I was caught, fear and regret consumed me. In my holding cell, Luke 21:14–15 came alive in my heart, and I prayed for words. At sentencing, God spoke through me, cutting my 145-month term to just two years. After release, probation felt like freedom—but grief drove me back to drugs until a brother in county jail handed me a Bible. That day, I bowed at an altar, surrendering fully to Jesus, and felt a peace I’d never known. I was baptized on May 12, 2019, and from that moment, prison helped shape me—but Jesus truly saved my life.

Michael shares his journey of going from being behind bars to finding the love and forgiveness of Jesus. Turning his life of addiction towards a life of freedom.

God Behind Bars
2.3 million people in the U.S. are affected by incarceration each year, the most unchurched population in our country. We are on a mission to change that. We will stop at nothing to ensure every inmate in the U.S. has direct and personal access to the Gospel. We want to help them grow their faith, heal trauma and emotional wounds, break addictions and cycles, and allow every person behind bars to step into their calling as sons and daughters of the Most High. It’s a simple fact that less than 15% of inmates are serving life sentences, and up to as many as 90% of all incarcerated individuals will be released back to society at some point. 75% of those released will return to prison within three years. God Behind Bars addresses this drastic recidivism problem with a unique approach that focuses on the spiritual, physical, and relational needs of inmates and their families.
