SummaryI’m Jim Payne, a retired U.S. Navy diver who leapt at the once-in-a-lifetime chance to serve beside my SEAL brothers. From a Cold-War scare to marriage trouble and a chaplain who pointed me to Jesus, God kept planting seeds. Training was brutal—a storm at sea and a live-fire accident—but nothing compared with 2005, when Operation Red Wings took 15 of my closest friends. Identifying their bodies crushed me, yet the Lord met me in that darkness, healing my heart and turning my tears into a testimony that now waters seeds of hope in others.
In 2005, Jim deployed to the Middle East as part of a Navy SEAL platoon, alongside 15 of his closest friends and brothers-in-arms. Partway during their deployment, his team suffered devastating losses in the mountains of Afghanistan in an incident detailed in the best-selling book and hit movie “Lone Survivor”.
As Jim grappled with crippling grief, it was all he could do, to cling to the One who offered any glimmer of hope.
Note: We’re re-releasing Jim’s story today in honor of Memorial Day, when we remember and honor those who have served and fallen while defending our country. This story was originally released in 2021.
