I’m Laura Perry, and for nearly nine years, I lived as a man named Jake. Testosterone and surgeries promised me happiness and freedom from the pain I felt in my female body, yet they never fully eased my dysphoria. Strained family relationships, early sexual abuse, and a deep longing for male acceptance all pushed me toward an identity I believed would solve my hurt. While each new procedure or legal step brought short-lived relief, it never silenced the truth I wrestled with inside. Only when I finally yielded to Christ did the facade shatter. Jesus showed me that my real worth wasn’t in trying to be a man but in embracing the woman He created me to be. Now, fully anchored in God’s love, I share my story so others can discover the true healing, peace, and acceptance found only in Him.

Today, we’re joined by detransitioner Laura Perry Smalts, author of “Transgender to Transformed: A Story of Transition That Will Truly Set You Free,” to share her testimony of how she went from believing she was a man to embracing her womanhood under Christ. We start off with Laura’s childhood, during which she became convinced that her mother wanted her to be a boy. This, combined with early sexual abuse and not fitting in with other girls, eventually led her to believe she needed to become a man. Laura shares how desperate she was for male attention and the extreme behavior that led her family to begin worrying, as well as the transgender support group that first convinced her to seek “trans care.” We discuss how testosterone initially made her feel amazing, but she quickly realized that the more she transitioned, the more imprisoned she was and that she would never truly become a man despite going through the motions.
