Why Authenticity Is So Important in Juvenile Detention Ministry
Summary
We are Marcus and Evelyn Martinez, pastors in Toronto, Canada. Through our work with young offenders in juvenile detention, we learned that authenticity is key in ministry. By listening to the Holy Spirit and allowing the love of God to shine through, we discovered that people can easily detect insincerity. Our experience taught us that genuine ministry isn’t about putting on a show; it’s about living out the truth of the gospel, breaking down barriers, and building real relationships. We share our journey to encourage others to be true to who they are and to minister with integrity.

Marcus and Evelyn Martinez, Partners with Kenneth Copeland Ministries, have learned the value of being open and authentic as they minister the love of God, especially when working in juvenile detention ministry. In fact, it was through their work with juvenile offenders that they learned how to minister effectively and even to pastor.
“I’ve worked with young offenders’ jail, and with young offenders,” says Marcus, “and they can see through fake stuff real easy. They taught me how to be authentic. They taught me how to truly talk to people and how to care.”
Marcus’ desire to reach young people with the truth of the Gospel and the love of God never wavered. Though he admits, “To get them to open up takes a lot of work.” To succeed in juvenile detention ministry, Marcus says he had to learn to listen to the Holy Ghost and trust the Holy Ghost to speak in a way that a person can hear and understand.
God used their time with juvenile detention ministry to prepare Marcus and Evelyn for full-time ministry. When they founded Destiny & Dominion Word Ministries in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, they were ready to deal with adults with the same authenticity that had had with the youth.
“[Church members] want to see that what you say, what you preach, and how you come across is who you really are,” Evelyn says.
