Summary

I am Tom Scales, a survivor of severe childhood sexual abuse. I remember a painful beginning—being punished and thrown out of my home at age 5, left to cry on the back steps with no safety or love. As I grew up, the abuse continued at the hands of trusted figures: my family, local priests, and others who exploited my vulnerability. These traumatic experiences left me numb, with my early memories fragmented by fear and rejection. Desperate for a safe haven, I even turned to traditions like becoming an altar boy, only to be further betrayed by those meant to protect me. Over the years, the weight of these abuses held me down until I finally mustered the courage to break my silence. By joining a support group for adult survivors, I began the slow process of healing and restoration. My testimony is a declaration of hope—it is only through the saving grace of Jesus Christ that I have been redeemed, and I share my story so that others who suffer may also find a way out.

Tom can’t remember a time when someone wasn’t sexually abusing him, whether it was his local priest, the man at the train station or his scoutmaster. But God has given him a voice, so that other young victims can find a way out.
