Jamie Valvano
Summary
I grew up in Cary, North Carolina, watching my dad—Jim Valvano, the famed basketball coach at North Carolina State—enjoy his passion for the game. When I was finishing my freshman year in college, we discovered that my dad had been diagnosed with cancer, a moment that marked a turning point in my life. Later, after returning to college, getting engaged, and pursuing a seemingly normal life, I discovered a lump in my breast at age 33. Despite initial reassurances, further testing confirmed that I had breast cancer, and in an instant, the world I had carefully built came crashing down. During my battle with cancer, there were countless moments of brokenness when I cried out to God. I was fortunate to stumble upon hope through my stepfather and the loving embrace of my family. That support led me to fully surrender to my faith, and today, as an almost 12-year survivor, I celebrate the restoration and renewal that my journey has brought into my life.
