Testimony: The Ugly Side of Music | Cortt Chavis
Summary
I have witnessed firsthand how music can stir up unedifying emotions and even lead one toward destructive habits. A young man once came to me, confessing that he had been exposed to pornography at an early age and that the music he listened to only deepened that struggle. As I reflected on my own lifelong passion for music—shaped by a musical family, formal training, and a career that once celebrated its beauty—I began to see the darker, ugly side of music that can pull our hearts away from God. Through prayer and a period of intense personal reflection, I learned to filter out every piece of music that did not edify my spirit or honor Jesus. I now live by a simple rule: if a song doesn’t bring glory to God and uplift my soul, I simply turn it off. I share this testimony to encourage every believer to guard their hearts and choose worship that truly honors our Lord.
