Paul Goldschmidt always made baseball number one in his life. He knew that making it as 1 of only 750 Major League Baseball players was a risky endeavor. But he determined to give everything he had to winning a slot in the big leagues. And when he won it, he knew keeping it meant an absurd level of dedication to his craft. Faith, family, and life off the field, all needed to take a backseat to his goal.
Then, he asked his hitting coach, Turner Ward, “How can I be better.” The answer he got back surprised him. Playing better ball, he was told, meant putting something else at the top of his life.

My name is Katherine Olen and I’m 32 years old from Anaheim, California. I grew up in a loving Christian home yet struggled with a legalistic mindset and a lukewarm approach to my faith. Though I attended church regularly, I never truly grasped the power of the Holy Spirit or the reality of spiritual gifts because of a cessationist upbringing. Over time, through a life-changing experience at a large youth conference and a powerful outpouring of the Holy Spirit that left me crying for days, I began to question what I had been taught. I discovered that spiritual gifts are very much active today—especially the gift of exhortation that God placed in me. My journey took me through seasons of doubt, personal grief, and even health challenges, including stressful medical ordeals. With deliverance prayers, fasting, and persistent seeking, my husband and I experienced true freedom from the strongholds of the enemy. Today, I am passionately engaged in ministry and worship, using music and testimony to encourage others to embrace the living God. I testify that Jesus and the power of His Spirit have transformed my life and continue to work mightily in our generation.

Catherine actually grew up in the church, where she oscillated between a legalistic mindset trying to earn salvation through works OR a more lukewarm mindset of hyper-grace where she saw sin as no big deal.

Because of a more cessationist upbringing that denied the healing and power of God for today, she was tempted back to the world over and over again throughout her teenage and college years, never truly surrendering to the Lord until 2019 when she then discovered her spiritual gift of exhortation.

This, of course, led to an understanding that despite what she learned in Bible college, the spiritual giftings were indeed real. From there, she and her husband went through deliverance and have been walking in freedom ever since, sharing the gospel and ministering to others.

In college, I experienced the lure of partying and even went through a painful divorce at 24. It was in the midst of these trials that I decided to return to God, praying earnestly for help to fall in love with Him. Hey friends, this one’s real and raw. Joanna and I dove into some heavy stuff — sharing my journey, my struggles, and how God has been walking me through it all. I talked about growing up in a Christian home, rebelling, and how depression and partying took over for a while. I hit rock bottom, but God met me there in the mess and gave me a second chance at life.

Joanna helped me walk through what it’s like raising our boys, Logan and Luke. Logan’s autistic and constantly overcoming, and Luke, well… Luke’s got a long list of medical challenges, including daily seizures. It hasn’t been easy — from managing diagnoses to facing moments where we’ve had to revive Luke — but God has been faithful. There are days I feel overwhelmed, but I know the Lord is holding us through every storm.

Anxiety has been part of this journey, but God keeps reminding me: “Let go, Kayleen, I’ve got this.” Even though life with Luke can be unpredictable, I know my God is good. Whether the miracles happen tomorrow or in heaven, I choose to trust Him.

So yeah, it’s messy, but it’s beautiful too. God’s used these challenges to deepen my faith and grow me in ways I never imagined. I’m learning to embrace the little wins — a smile from Luke, Logan saying new words — and trust that God’s hand is over it all.

Thank you for listening, for holding space for my story. And remember, it’s okay not to have it all together. We serve a good, faithful Father who meets us exactly where we are.
