Summary

I was born in a refugee camp in Sudan and raised by my Christian mother amidst overwhelming challenges. From a young age, I faced oppressive Islamic teachings and was forced to confront a brutal system that demanded I renounce my faith. I endured being expelled from school, public humiliation, and a court that sentenced me to 100 lashes and even death by hanging for refusing to convert. In prison, I discovered strength in prayer and began ministering to fellow inmates—starting small businesses to support those in need. Through every trial, the Lord sustained me with His grace and delivered me from the brink of death. My journey is a testament to Jesus’ power to restore, bring peace, and ignite hope even in the darkest moments.

Mariam Ibraheem was born in a refugee camp in Sudan. Her Muslim father died when she was six, and her mother raised her in the Christian faith. After a traumatic childhood, Mariam became a successful businessperson, married the man she loved, and had a beautiful baby boy.

But one day in 2013, her world was shattered when Sudan authorities insisted she was Muslim because of her father’s background. She had broken the law by marrying a Christian man, and she must abandon both her marriage and her son and adopt Islam. Under intense pressure, Mariam repeatedly refused. Ultimately, a Sharia court sentenced her to 100 lashes—and death by hanging.

Follow Mariam’s story from life under Islamic law, through imprisonment and childbirth while shackled, to her remarkable escape from death following an international outcry and advocacy that included diplomats, journalists, activists, and even Pope Francis.

Persecution against Christians is increasing around the world. Christianity is now the world’s most persecuted minority group, but out of that persecution has come a tremendous message that must be shared.

Next year, BTJ is hosting a VOICES OF THE PERSECUTED CONFERENCE to highlight testimonies of underground house church leaders from China, the Middle East, and Asia.

Next year, we will be bringing speakers together like Brother Yun from China, Sister Esther from North Korea, Sister Shagufta Kauser from Pakistan, Pastor Brunson from Turkey, and many more speakers. The event will be the final week of October next year in 2024 and will be hosted in a special retreat in North Carolina.

More details will be posted soon. To put your name on a waiting list to be alerted the minute registration is posted, please send an email to belinda.btjtravel@gmail.com

Summary

My name is Bob and I have been involved in gospel work in North Africa for over twenty years. I have witnessed government persecution and even family opposition to the gospel, with cycles of intense pressure that test the faith of believers. Through these challenges, I have seen how consistent, Christ-like love—exemplified by Jesus’ interaction with the woman at the well—can break down barriers and bring transformation. I urge all believers to listen, love, and pray for the persecuted, trusting that God’s perfect love casts out fear and brings hope to even the most troubled hearts.

Brother Bob has been connected to gospel work in North Africa for more than 20 years. He says government persecution of Christians in the region tends to come in cycles, but pressure and persecution of Christians by their own family members is common.

But even in the midst of family persecution, Christians have a chance to demonstrate the reality of the gospel. “If believers persevere and continue to be a light,” Bob says, “most of the time their family eventually accepts them. And in many cases, others in the family come to know Christ.”

Listen for the story of how a Muslim wife showed great displeasure after her husband accepted Christ—but was eventually won over by the consistent, Christ-like love he showed her.

Local people in North Africa have many fears: bad omens, the fear of spirits, or fear of the future. The absence of fear is one of the marks of Christians in the region and often draws others to learn more about Christ.

After working among Muslims for more than two decades, Bob says Christians who love and listen are more effective in sharing the gospel than those who criticize Islam or start a religious debate. He points to the model of Jesus’ interaction with the woman at the well.

Bob will share how he prepares new believers to spread the truth of Christ, to walk alongside others in their difficulties and to withstand persecution when it comes. Listen as Bob gives practical ways we can be like Christ and tells how our persecuted brothers and sisters are living that out. Bob will also equip us to pray for Christians in North Africa.

I am Olivia from the ancient Santal Christian community in Bangladesh. My family and I face relentless persecution—land grabbing by Muslim fundamentalists, violent harassment, and even attacks that have left my husband, Deen, severely injured and disabled. During a protest against these injustices, our plight worsened as our homes were burned and 250 families were rendered homeless. In the midst of this terror, I prayed to Jesus, who saved my life and healed my heart. I remain steadfast in my faith, grateful to Barnabas Aid for supporting our community, and I trust that God’s mercy will one day bring us eternal peace.

Summary

My name is Dao. I come from a small village in Northern Laos, where Christian persecution is intense. I was married at 17, and my husband, who struggled with drug abuse, became violently abusive—once even trying to kill me and my mother with a gun. With no one by my side, I began praying to God for deliverance. A pastor then introduced me to a skill center run by Barnabas Aid. I joined the center, learned new skills, and received much-needed food support. Today, I work as a manager at the center, teaching sewing and mushroom farming to other women, and I share my faith to inspire hope. I am grateful to Jesus for rescuing me from my painful past and giving me a fresh start so that my daughter can grow up to be a good Christian and even pursue a career in healthcare.

** About this story**
Christian persecution in South-East Asia can be intense. Worship is often shut down or prevented by the local authorities. Church members are sometimes arrested, despite legal protections that should allow Christians freedom to worship.

Dao dreamed of finding some safety even in this dangerous environment and so she got married and had a child. But her husband began taking drugs, and became abusive.

Dao, with her daughter and mother, had to escape and begin a new life. Still with no home or source of income, she prayed for God to deliver her from this hopeless situation.

My name is Vangai. I endured a life of unimaginable abuse in Afghanistan – forced into marriage as a child, beaten, and even attacked with acid, which scarred my face forever. In the depths of my despair, while undergoing surgery in South Korea, I discovered the true power of Jesus Christ. His love transformed my life, and I gave my life to Him. When the Taliban threatened to release my brutal husband, I fled with my children, siblings, and mother, finding refuge first in Pakistan and then in Brazil. Today, I stand as a testament to God’s redemption, gratitude, and unyielding faith. I am forever grateful to Jesus for rescuing me from affliction and granting me a new life.

Summary

I remember reading about a devoted teacher in Pakistan who defied retirement to continue teaching her final year students, only to face unspeakable horrors—being brutally raped multiple times and murdered. I kept her photo close for ages, a constant reminder of the deep suffering that afflicts our Christian community. I also recall a haunting image of a mother in agony, her children caught in the midst of violent conflict. These tragic events have profoundly strengthened my walk with God, inspiring me to serve others with unwavering faith. All glory to Jesus, whose mercy and deliverance sustain us in our darkest moments.

Summary

I was privileged to witness God’s intervention in Romania where I served with Barnabas Aid, praying with suffering Christians at a refugee home on the Romania-Ukraine border. I saw heartbreaking images, including a man shot on his bike and a family grieving the loss of their young son. Through these trials, I experienced a profound call to serve, offering hope and support through prayer. I give all glory to Jesus for guiding and strengthening us in the midst of conflict and tragedy.

Christian persecution in Eritrea is brutal but the faith of the Christians is strong and they refuse to deny Jesus Christ. The stories of persecution coming from Eritrea are heartbreaking but there is hope.

Eritrea is a beautiful nation located in East Africa in the Horn of Africa, bordering Ethiopia, Sudan and the Red Sea. After 30 years of civil war and dominance by neighboring Ethiopia, Eritrea was declared an independent state on May 24, 1993. People celebrated and danced on the streets of the capital Asmara. However, today #Eritrea is known as the “North Korea of Africa.” Christian persecution is on the rise in Africa. Eritrea has an authoritarian government and it’s reported that half the population has fled the country because there is no freedom of speech, religion or movement. It’s ranked number six in the World Watch List an annual ranking of the 50 countries where Christian persecution is most extreme.

The people of Eritrea deserve better than this. What goes on in Eritrea is hugely under reported. Much of it is kept secret because Eritrea is considered one of the most repressive and secretive states on earth. It’s been ranked worst in the world for press freedom. There have been no elections in the country since independence in 1993 and President Isaias Afewerki has been dictating the country for decades. Eritreans fleeing persecution and oppression in their homeland are facing kidnapping, imprisonment, torture and beatings.

Watch now and see why Eritrea is known as the North Korea of Africa. Discover more about the underground Church, and how Pentecostals and Evangelical Christians are persecuted, and the testimonies of God’s brave ones in Eritrea who refuse to deny Jesus Christ.

Persecution Worldwide brings Christian persecution topics to light that often go under-reported. Connect with us, be challenged and inspired to pray and stand with persecuted Christians worldwide.

Be prepared because Christian persecution is coming to America. In countries where Christians are persecuted and suppressed Christianity is increasing rapidly. This has happened for example in China and in the Arabic world. How do persecuted Christians see their life and faith? What is the secret of their success and why the number of Christians tend to rise in the middle of persecution?

Western Christians have had a freedom of faith for a long time. But, are we now approaching the crossroads where our societies are increasingly turning against Christian values? Instead of gloomy and heavy handling, the documentary brings to the persecution a different perspective that can make Western Christians stronger than ever.

The documentary gives a voice to Chinese Christians through Dr. Bob Fu, the leader of the ChinaAid organization that is specialized in helping them. Fu has encountered persecution as a young Christian in China as he worked full-time as an English teacher in the Chinese Communist Party´s school and in the evenings spread the message of Jesus by a bike in Beijing area.

The persecuted Christians of the Muslim world are represented by Rev. Yassir Eric. Raised in the midst of a radical Islamic lineage, and abandoned and even “buried” by his family after his conversion, Yassir opens up the subject as a former persecutor and now, a persecuted ex-Muslim.

The history of Christian persecution is presented by Dr. Susanna Kokkonen. She is particularly known for being an expert on Jewish persecution, but her current role as a head of the Hope for Persecuted Peoples and her extensive perspective on the history of persecution brings an important time perspective and depth to the documentary.
