Summary

I was born in Rwanda and lost both my mother and, later, my grandmother and uncle during the Rwandan Genocide. My siblings and I escaped death, but the trauma followed us. In an orphanage, I wrestled with bitterness and questioned how a loving God could allow such atrocities. Still, I glimpsed God’s provision: I was spared on multiple occasions—missing bullets, grenades, or weapons that unexpectedly failed. Receiving an Operation Christmas Child box planted a seed of hope, and eventually, I accepted Jesus Christ at nine years old. Yet I still carried anger toward the neighbors who had killed my relatives. Over time, God surrounded me with mentors who helped me process my pain and realize that Christ died for all people—even the men who stole my family members’ lives. Years later, I was given the opportunity to meet one of my uncle’s killers face to face in prison. By God’s grace, I forgave him and prayed over him. God’s love was big enough for us both. Although I can’t forget the pain, I choose to let Christ define my life. I share my story, hoping others find courage to forgive, heal, and discover God’s miraculous hand through it all.

Approximately 230,000 people died in the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake and tsunami, including both of Monica’s parents.

At just ten years old, my family’s vacation turned into a nightmare as the tsunami struck. Amid the chaos and fear, I felt God’s guiding presence that saved our lives. This miraculous survival deepened my faith and helped me overcome lifelong fears, leading me to become a lifeguard and dedicate my life to serving others. Through God’s grace, I found strength and purpose, transforming my trauma into a story of hope and courage.

20 years ago, Riley lived through one of the deadliest natural disasters in human history. The 2004 Boxing Day Tsunami took the lives of 230,000 people.
She was a 10 year old little girl when her family travelled to Thailand. After hanging out with family and volunteering at the orphanage, they booked a holiday at a beach front resort. The day after Christmas their holiday turned from paradise to the stuff nightmares are made of. Her family had to run for their lives. And truly they shouldn’t be alive today.

It’s a story of survival. But it’s also a testimony of God’s grace. And a story of what happens when we live through something traumatic, something unexpected and difficult and learn to rise above the pain. To welcome God to show us the path to deeper strength.

By the way, when the earthquake occurred on March 11, 2011, I was working in Tokyo on the 13th floor. As the buildings seemed about to collapse, I feared for my life. After evacuating to a park and struggling to return home due to halted trains, I was overwhelmed by fear and confusion. A voice guided me to a church where I found warmth and safety. God revealed that I possess the key to heaven through Jesus Christ. Attending a church service and witnessing Jesus on the cross made me realize the depth of my sin and the love Jesus has for me. Embracing His love, I found peace and joy, dedicating my life to Jesus and His work. Today, I live with a heart filled with peace, love, and joy, ready to share the key to heaven with others.
